All-black and larger than its cousin, the moorhen, it has a distinctive white beak and 'shield' above the beak which earns it the title 'bald'. Its feet have distinctive lobed flaps of skin on the toes, which act instead of webs when swimming. It patters noisily over the water before taking off and can be very aggressive towards others. Beautiful photos! Wonderful bird with beautiful details! Excellent catches!!
ReplyDeleteEven thought your Coots are slightly different than the ones here, they are delightful. The place that I saw them the most, is all dried up now, thanks to a handful of humankind~
ReplyDeleteAwww, lovely photos! I love seeing Coot's out and about, they always make me smile, they're very sweet little birds. - Tasha
ReplyDeleteWell done with the black and white combination, Bob. We have coots here too, and they DO have such interesting feet!
ReplyDeleteBig feet, you can't beat 'em.
DeleteBob, wonderful portraits of this Coot. We have them over here too!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting bird and what really caught my eye is how different this Coot is from the American Coot at the reserve I visit. They don't have the shield that this one has. Both are quite pretty birds though. Have a great day.
