White-headed Duck - Oxyura leucocephala

This duck is known from Spain, North Africa, western and central Asia. Photographed at Slimbridge WWT, in middle summer and in eclipse plumage.

Please look at my website bobswildlife.co.uk. There is a photo of a African Penguin, and  the Southern Pochard by Callum in the 'Guest photographer'

  6. A bill rather like a Spoonbill, I think. I've never seen either in real life.... Great pictures, nice Bert Jansch cut.

  7. Hello, what a cute duck. The bill looks like our Ruddy Duck. Great photos. Enjoy your day and the week ahead!

  8. As you know we have the Ruddy Duck here, a species which caused a good deal of consternation when introduced into Europe, and if I am not mistakes was exterminated in Britain.

  16. Hi Bob. Great images, but David has touched on a subject that, I believe, is still of concern. Sadly the Ruddy Duck has interbred with the White-headed Duck and, as I understand it, there are few pure White-headed Ducks left in Spain (mainly in closely guarded colonies). If it ever was exterminated in Britain, it has come back, and is regularly sighted in The Midlands.

With my best wishes - - - Richard

    1. Hi Richard, yes, and I have second opinion, since it was mentioned by WWT it was a White-headed Duck. Thanks for that.

    2. Sorry, Bob, I think I may have not written my comment very clearly. I think your images ARE of White-headed Duck. It is the Ruddy Duck that is still being seen in UK and are a ruddy nuisance!
