I am not quite sure whether it literally has only one eye, or we are seeing it from that perspective. If truly one eye is not functional it would seem to be an easy target for a Sparrowhawk or other predator, coming up on it from the blind side.
Before I saw your header, Bob, I wondered why the bird seemed to have a dark eye instead of the usual very obvious white eye (which I always think gives them a sinister look), and then I saw David's comment. It does, indeed, only have one eye - poor thing!
Hi Bob, the jackdaw is described here in the Netherlands as a very annoying bird. If I then see those beautiful pictures as you made them from the jackdaw, it is almost hard to believe. Beautiful pictures.
Hi Bob, After looking at the images and then the header, the poor thing has as you say just the one eye. Must be vulnerable to attack on that side. Well spotted and super images. All the best, John
