Common Crane (Grus grus)

Filmed at Robbie Garnett Hide, Slimbridge WWT, Glos, UK. Does anybody know who ringed them?

Please can you sign this petition to stop the proposed M4 over the Gwent Levels. I feel strongly about this because it is a place I visit a lot. The damage to the Gwent Levels along with Magor Marsh and the Newport Wetlands will be irreparable!

Please look at my website bobswildlife.co.uk. There is a photo of a Black-winged Stilt,  and  the  Lesser Whistlinf Duck by Callum in the 'Guest photographer'

    1. Yeah, the 'leg-irons'are a bit cacky, but is necessary to monitor each. It is because that meanness who would shoot them EC.

  19. I'm surprised by the number of rings and, as the combinations are different, I wonder what they mean. Beautiful birds.

  31. Those cranes look beautiful birds.
I'm no expert but it does seem they have too many rings on their legs ... there must be a reason for it, but I'm not sure what that is.

    Have a lovely weekend

    All the best Jan

  34. Shouldn't be hard to track down their origin.

  35. Beautiful birds! I tried signing the petition, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe because I'm in another country?

  36. Hi Bob. I'd be a lot happier with your super camera-work if those poor birds didn't have such brightly coloured adornments on their legs. I know it's all part of monitoring how well these birds are doing in UK, but I hope that they increase to the point that someone agrees that it's no longer necessary to ring them, so that we can all see them in their natural beauty.

With my best wishes - - - Richard

  37. Stunning photos of beautiful cranes! They seem to be a nice couple. Red-crowned crane, or Japanese crane looks like them, but the plumage is not slate grey but white. They are thought to be lucky birds.
