Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

The chaffinch is the UK's second commonest breeding bird, and is arguably the most colourful of the UK's finches. Its patterned plumage helps it to blend in when feeding on the ground and it becomes most obvious when it flies, revealing a flash of white on the wings and white outer tail feathers. It does not feed openly on bird feeders - it prefers to hop about under the bird table or under the hedge. You'll usually hear chaffinches before you see them, with their loud song and varied calls. Write and tell me if you  see  any Bohemian Waxwings, we have a new section. Please look at my website bobswildlife.co.uk. There is a photo of a Common Rabbit, and a photo of  the Burrowing Owl in the 'Guest Photos '. I have started a new sightings page, please feel free to add your sightings.

  31. Great captures again Bob. The chaffinch is common here in Finland too. There is an old saying here, that summer comes after a half month you see the first chaffinch in the spring...
