Pheasant [Phasianus colchicus]

A large, long-tailed gamebird. Males have rich chestnut, golden-brown and black markings on body and tail, with a dark green head and red face wattling. Females are mottled with paler brown and black. They were introduced to the UK long ago and more recent introductions have brought in a variety of races and breeds for sport shooting, unfortunately.

  1. Bob, they are reared purely for shooting and must be the easiest bird to shoot. They look good and the Reeves Pheasant is spectacular. They are not very bright in the brain department but their plumage makes up for it.

    1. Yes, it can only be shooting for the rich, at least they don't miss everytime.

  2. How nice to see one alive and well, wonderful plumage. Sadly because they are not very bright, (perhaps all the inbreeding), I see more deceased than alive as they are the victims of cars on countryside roads. I enjoy seeing them in the fields ambling along. One bird where I used to live in Devon made friends with a local farm and came to be a great pet, even bringing a Mrs home.

  7. I have a hard time looking at most any creature and trying to imagine what goes on in the mind of someone who wants to shoot it.. aside from starvation, of course. Or if it's a mercy kill. What a beautiful bird.. and beautiful photos.

  9. Lieber <bob,
es ist schlimm, dass man diese wunderschönen Vögel schießt.
Was haben die Jäger davon? Nur wegen der Schwanzfedern?
    Einen schönen Wochenteiler wünscht Dir

I HATE sport shooting - how can people take pleasure in killing such a gorgeous thing just for the fun of it?

  18. Hi Bob. Your Pheasants are simply gorgeous - their bright colors are amazing. I have a bit of trouble getting close enough for decent shots of them, but once in a while I get lucky.

  25. Bob, what a beauty! Aren't they wonderful. We used to have them around here, but I haven't seen one for a long time. I think a combination of urbanization and coyotes!

  26. Gorgeous birds. Shooting them? Hiss and spit is the politest thing I can say. Though I am thinking rather a lot of less polite things.
