These handsome diving ducks are a member of the sawbill family, so called because of their long, serrated bills, used for catching fish. A largely freshwater bird, the goosander first bred in the UK in 1871. It built up numbers in Scotland and then since 1970 it has spread across northern England into Wales, reaching south-west England. Its love of salmon and trout has brought it into conflict with fishermen. It is gregarious, forming into flocks of several thousand in some parts of Europe. [RSPB] Sorry about this one, it was photographed from a long way off, and badly cut.
He is very well suited for catching those fish isn't he ! Ah Lynard been a while , you certainly take me down memory lane Bob~ "If I leave here tomorrow will you still remember me" ? lol ( was one of my favs of course)
Lovely ducks to see Bob, it would be wonderful to see a flock of thousands. Lovely shots you've captured here, they're difficult to photograph...I was trying to take some shots of a male this morning and had trouble to not get blocked out darks on the head or blown out white on the body!...[;o)
