House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

Noisy and gregarious, these cheerful exploiters of man's rubbish and wastefulness, have managed to colonise most of the world. The ultimate avian opportunist perhaps. Monitoring suggests a severe decline in the UK house sparrow population, recently estimated as dropping by 71 per cent between 1977 and 2008 with substantial declines in both rural and urban populations. Whilst the decline in England continues, Breeding Bird Survey data indicate recent population increases in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.(RSPB)

  7. We have a very large group of these little ones that live in a very dense hedge next to our driveway.
They stay all winter, and the seem completely oblivious to the cold.
These photographs are really beautiful, Bob.
    Happy day to you!

  13. I miss my sweet little sparrows. They were everywhere when I lived in West Texas. Living under an oak canopy in Tampa, I never see them. But a mile away, away from the thick trees, I see them at street corners, playing chicken with the cars. Ohhhhh
