Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus)

It was raining, "cats and  dogs", I don't know why we use it, maybe somebody will tell me? Anyhow, I  had to go delving in my "magic bag".

I don't know about the cats and dogs, either, but they rain on this side of the pond, too. ;)

  3. beautiful bird!

(from what i've read, 'raining cats and dogs' expression comes from the olden days of thatched roofs. the animals would often climb into the soft roofing materials to stay warm. when it rained heavily, they would slip through the thatching and fall into the home.)

  6. Excellent shots Bob.

A few meanings of the saying Bob.
    I like Theresa's; another is:

'raining cats and dogs' is the prosaic fact that, in the filthy streets of 17th/18th century England, heavy rain would occasionally carry along dead animals and other debris. The animals didn't fall from the sky, but the sight of dead cats and dogs floating by in storms could well have caused the coining of this colourful phrase.'

  37. As some of the previous comments say raining cats and dogs is used to describe an especially heavy rain, it is still in common usage today and few who say this question what it really means or where it came from. It's origins are hard to trace. There is evidence that it was used in the 17th century but it may be even older. There are a number of explanations of how it came into usage.

The most widely circulated is that in the 16th-century many homes had thatched roofs and animals could crawl into the thatch and find shelter from the elements, and then fall out during heavy rain. Hard to see a dog clambering up there though but some houses do have very low thatch.

    This Kestrel is magnificent!
